Pancreas
The pancreas is a glandular organ located behind the stomach. It plays vital roles in both digestion and blood sugar regulation by producing digestive enzymes and hormones.
Functions of the Pancreas
- Exocrine function: Secretes digestive enzymes (amylase, lipase, proteases) into the small intestine to help digest food
- Endocrine function: Produces hormones such as insulin and glucagon that regulate blood glucose levels
Common Pancreatic Conditions
- Pancreatitis – Inflammation of the pancreas (acute or chronic)
- Pancreatic Cancer – Malignant tumors in the pancreas
- Diabetes Mellitus – Resulting from insufficient insulin production or action
- Cystic Fibrosis – Genetic disorder affecting pancreatic secretions
- Pancreatic Cysts and Pseudocysts – Fluid-filled sacs in or around the pancreas
