Cervical
The cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It plays an important role in reproductive health and is susceptible to infections, inflammation, and cancer — particularly cervical cancer caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
Pathological tests of the cervix are primarily used to screen for precancerous changes, detect cervical cancer at an early stage, and diagnose infections or other abnormalities.
Functions of the Cervix
- Acts as a gateway between the uterus and vagina
- Produces cervical mucus to aid or prevent sperm passage
- Opens during childbirth to allow baby delivery
- Protects the uterus from infections
Common Cervical Pathological Conditions
- Cervicitis – Inflammation of the cervix, often due to infection
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection – A major risk factor for cervical cancer
- Cervical dysplasia – Abnormal cell changes on the cervix, potentially precancerous
- Cervical cancer – Malignant tumor originating from cervical cells
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) – Including chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, etc.
